TEACHING / MEDITATION

OUR THURSDAY NIGHT TEACHING FORMAT HAS CHANGED DUE TO COVID LOCKDOWN. PLEASE READ ON TO SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING INSTEAD:

For the coming Thursday 15 July we will be having a Virtual CATCH-UP DAY!!!

We have all been unable to meet and catch up in person due to Covid lock-down restrictions and our move from Lewisham premise. Meredith has come up with this wonderful way for us to catch up. So now we are going to ‘meet’ in a new environment – over Zoom. This is definitely different to our ‘usual’ place of meeting – but we will still be able to see each other, share a brief meditation and than chat. There will NO teaching.
Remember to join everyone else on that evening Thursday 15 July from 7.30 – 8.30 pm and we can all have a lovely time being together.
No registration required, just log on to Zoom with the details below. See you all there.

CREATING BETTER RELATIONSHIPS COURSE
That is for the following 3 Thursdays.

Creating Better Relationships Course

| Free

Jointly by Association of Engaged Buddhists and Metta Centre

Presenter: David O’Rose & Tina Ng

Thursdays 22, 29 July & 5 Aug | 7.30-9pm

At the Buddhist Library in person (90-92 Church St, Camperdown) or via Zoom

Cost: Free or By Donation

So much of our life resolves around relationships, whether it’s relationship with others or with ourselves. When these relationships are challenging, stressful or difficult, it directly impacts on our wellness and happiness.

In this 3 weeks interactive course, David O’Rose and Tina Ng will engage participants to reflect on their own relationships and relationships generally, work through challenges and learn skills to create better relationships with others and with themselves. There will be plenty of opportunities for discussions, questions, sharing and healing.

We will explore the following topics:

22 July: Working through challenges in relationships

29 July: Healing family relationships

5 Aug : Befriending yourself

About the Presenters:

David O’Rose is an experienced leader of meditation groups, both in Sydney and Hong Kong. His approach is utterly simple, where the living experience of a meditative approach to everyday life is the aim of practice.

Tina Ng is the Founder and President of the Metta Centre and also the Principal Solicitor of Metta Legal, a law firm that deals with cases relating to family law, child protection, property, wills & estates, civil litigation and guardianship matters. She is an accredited mediator at Metta Resolution, which provides mediation, training and coaching to resolve conflict in the community and within families.

FOOD VOUCHER DRIVE

Volunteer with box of food for poor. Donation concept.

In the past our Association had worked closely with the Asylum Seekers’ Centre in Newtown. Some of you might have been aware and also involved in our past initiatives – collecting food items for their Food Bank (which we did twice a year in the past) and making hot meals for them at the centre.

Covid changed all that. Instead of collecting food items and basic necessities for their Food Bank (as the Food Bank is now closed) we are now collecting donations which will be used to buy food vouchers for the asylum seekers.

We are inviting you to help us raise funds to buy the Food Vouchers for them through the  Asylum Seeker’s Centre, especially in such challenging times. Let us do our bit to help those much less fortunate than us.Please send your money (no amount too small) to the account details below. Donations will be gratefully accepted until 14 August.

This drive is not restricted to only AEB community. Feel free to pass on to the wider community and let us share the opportunity to help those who are in need.

When transfering your donation, please put on the subject line: Asylum seekers

DALAI LAMA’S 86TH BRITHDAY MESSAGE – on Compassion and Ahimsa
                                         The Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama celebrated his 86th birthday on 6 July 2021 and here is his message:

“Now I’m just one human being. Many people really show they love me, and many people actually love my smile. In spite of my old age, my face is quite handsome. Many people really show me genuine friendship.

Now that it’s nearly my birthday, I want to express my deep appreciation for all of my friends who have really shown me love, respect, and trust. I want to express my thanks. For myself, I can assure you that for the rest of my life, I’m committed to serving humanity and working to protect the climate condition. Since I became a refugee and now settled in India, I have taken full advantage of India’s freedom and religious harmony. I want to assure you that for the rest of my life, I’ll be fully committed to this work. And then also, I really appreciate the Indian concept of secular values, not dependent on religion, such as honesty, karuna (compassion), and ahimsa (non-violence).

So, my dear friends, on my birthday, this is my gift. Please keep it in mind. I myself am committed to non-violence and compassion until my death. This is my offering to my friends. I hope my friends will also keep non-violence and compassion for the rest of your lives. So firstly, this is like a report about my life. And secondly, all my human brothers, sisters, should keep these two things, non-violence and compassion, until your death. Thank you.”

Now we share a book written by the Dalai Lama

  BECOMING ENLIGHTENED / DALAI LAMA

Translated and edited by Jeffrey Hopkins.

This is a sharing of the above book – rather than a review. Each reader will have his/her idea and opinion of a book which could be different to the views of another person. Here more details are given on the book, so you can decide whether to pick up the book or not to.

In this book, the Dalai Lama writes in his usual style about how to achieve a fulfilled spiritual life. The book begins with a ‘background’ – comparing religions; the Buddhist framework; Practicing Buddhism; Knowing the qualifications of a teacher and Buddhism in India and Tibet.

The next parts – Initial level of practice;  Middle level of practice and High level of practice, he talks about different topics and each topic ends with notes for Contemplation which are effectively a summary of the topic which also includes suggestions for practice e.g.

On Altruism, the Contemplation covers: (an extract)

“Consider:

  1. We like life stories motivated by altruism, whereas hearing about the lives of of those whose actions stemmed from wanting to harm others evokes fear and apprehension.

  2. A beautiful internal attitude is more important than external beauty.

  3. Only you can make your mind beautiful.”

Then in the chapter on Engendering great compassion, the Contemplation notes say:(again an extract)

  1. Imagine your best friend in front of you and meditate on each of the three strengths of love until you deeply feel it:….

  2. Extend this meditation to more friends, one by one.

  3. Imagine a neutral person in front of you and meditate on each of the three strengths of love until you deeply feel it ….

Some of the topics covered include:

Thinking about future lives, Identifying the refuge, Karma, the implication of impermanence, viewing reality, Buddhahood, reviewing the steps …

It also has selected readings if you would like to follow through.

The book is available for borrowing at the Buddhist Library.

QUOTATION TO SHARE

“If you experience something and you cannot recognise it, then that experience ceases to be. One of the essential meanings of experience is recognition. And when there is recognition, it has already been known, as already been experienced, otherwise you could not recognise it.”
– J. Krishnamurti in The Awakening of Intelligence.
