SUMMARY:Weekend Silent Meditation Retreat with Kynan Tan
DESCRIPTION:Registration via Eventbrite \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nThis 3-night meditation retreat allows practitioners to settle into stillness and quiet. The retreat becomes a container and supportive environment to go deeper into meditation than is typically possible with the busyness and complexities of daily life. \n\n\n\nThis is a student-centred retreat\, which means that there is no set curriculum to follow but rather each student will continue their own meditation practice and all talks and interviews will be responsive to students’ needs and interests. \n\n\n\nRetreat Schedule\n\n\n\nThe schedule will mostly alternate between seated and walking meditation. Each day there will be a dharma talk\, a 1:1 interview with the teacher\, three meals\, and time for exercise or walking outside. \n\n\n\nWe will observe noble silence from Thursday night until Sunday noon. This means only speaking when it is necessary and avoiding eye contact (except with the teacher or the retreat manager). Retreatants will be asked to completely refrain from communication devices (there will be an emergency contact if someone needs to reach you). \n\n\n\nAbout Kynan Tan\n\n\n\nKynan Tan is a meditation teacher who takes a collaborative approach to helping students achieve their meditation goals. He came to meditation after struggles with stress\, anxiety\, and depression and found the practice to be transformative. He believes that meditation has enormous potential for creating positive change and opening up new ways of relating to our experience. \n\n\n\nKynan draws upon a number of different modern and traditional techniques of contemplative and introspective practice. He is a longtime practitioner of The Mind Illuminated\, Rob Burbea’s insight meditation techniques\, nondual awareness\, and brahmavihārā practices (mettā\, compassion\, empathetic joy\, and equanimity). \n\n\n\nKynan studies meditation with Dr. Tucker Peck. He teaches the Pragmatic Dharma Club at the San Francisco Dharma Collective\, has co-taught retreats with Tucker Peck and Michael Taft\, and teaches students 1:1 as well as through online meditation courses. Kynan has sat a number of retreats\, including a month-long solo retreat in 2021. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue and Cost\n\n\n\nVejjasala\, located just outside the village of Wingello in the Southern Highlands of NSW\, is the retreat centre of the Association of Engaged Buddhists (AEB). The name\, Vejjasala\, means a place for healing. \n\n\n\nTickets are assigned strictly on a first-come\, first-served basis via Eventrbite. \n\n\n\nThis retreat is catered with three vegan meals per day. Please indicate if you have any allergies or dietary requirements. We may not be able to accommodate all requests. \n\n\n\nThe cost for the retreat is $400. Members and Friends of the Association of Engaged Buddhists should use the Promo code AEBMEMFRI to receive the member price of $320. This cost covers food and accommodation. Payment to the teacher is traditionally made by donation after the retreat. This is suggested to be both sustainable to you and generous for the teacher. \n\n\n\nTo join AEB visit: our membership page. This is to ensure the safety of all members attending the retreat.\n\n\n\nAdequate social distancing\, hand-washing and other sensible measure should be followed by all attendees. \n\n\n\nIt should be noted that participants attend these retreats entirely at their own discretion and should consider their own risks and responsibilities in regard to COVID. SUMMARY:Dr Jonathan Page: The Four Pillars of Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nIn modern parlance “well-being” has lost much of its meaning\, as have love\, kindness and happiness\, with the true profound meaning\, behind the spoken word\, often lost\, never fully encountered\, and thus having no spiritual impact and degrading communication with others. \n\n\n\nNonetheless we can focus our awareness and felt sense on the fundamental phenomenon of Being\, as opposed to Not Being\, and as opposed to doing or going\, and explore\, understand and strengthen our sense of Being and therefore the true notion of Well-Being. \n\n\n\nWe may reacquaint ourselves with the deep wonder of well-being\, and receive some stimulus to linger in the experience. In one useful recent analysis of well-being the following four components were reported: \n\n\n\n1. Awareness2. Connection (Inter-connection; Inter-being)3. Insight4. Purpose in life \n\n\n\nEach pillar can be deeply understood and developed further. The four are mutually enhancing \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nJonathan Page has been a medical oncologist for 38 years and whose meditation practice goes back to 1984\, but to his chagrin was largely an erratic practitioner until 2004\, generally employing meditation as a last resort to manage innumerable life crises (with variable impact). Over time he has found meditation to be of great personal benefit\, particularly in navigating the major challenges of life\, notably aging and mortality\, the impermanence of relationships and the ravages of burnout. In understanding and largely overcoming burnout it has been possible to treat cancer patients with greater compassion\, attending to the vital psycho-spiritual domain\, whilst retaining some degree of resilience. Meditation can open the door to clear understanding and vast possibility. \n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. SUMMARY:Dr Jonathan Page: Compassion through Crises - The Path to a Sustainable Future for Humanity.
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\n“Compassion through Crises – The Path to a Sustainable Future for Humanity.” \n\n\n\nThe euphemistic descriptor “Climate Change” represents a true modern crisis. This crisis is quite possibly the ultimate existential catastrophe for our species and many other non-human genera and taxonomic families\, many of whom have already become extinct through human activity\, constituting the Sixth Great Extinction. \n\n\n\nTo date\, despite the grim scientific reportage\, there has been an insufficient response by humanity\, even with the recent COP 26 meeting in Glasgow. There has been much political and even scientific “reticence”\, down-playing the actual seriousness of our plight and even misrepresenting the substantial risk of societal collapse. \n\n\n\nIndeed\, even the most basic corrective strategy\, the reduction of net green-house gas production to zero\, first recommended last century\, has not yet occurred to any significant degree\, and with national pledges mostly not yet enacted. Many climatic tipping points have either been passed or are approaching. A summer ice-free Arctic is likely to occur before 2040 with major consequences for the world. The Greenland and Tibetan glacial melting have been accelerating well beyond expectations. Likewise\, the rate of sea-level rise. It now seems likely that the average global temperature will exceed 2.0⁰ C within decades\, rising three times as fast in the northern polar region. \n\n\n\nHumanistic Buddhism (including other species as well) is ideally placed to help in this looming catastrophe through its confrontation with the truth\, through the Bodhisattva ideal (and practice)\, and through its experience in palliative care (with the associated expressions of denial\, anger\, desperation\, regret\, guilt\, but also potentially with forgiveness\, compassion and unconditional love). \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nJonathan Page has been a medical oncologist for 38 years and whose meditation practice goes back to 1984\, but to his chagrin was largely an erratic practitioner until 2004\, generally employing meditation as a last resort to manage innumerable life crises (with variable impact). Over time he has found meditation to be of great personal benefit\, particularly in navigating the major challenges of life\, notably aging and mortality\, the impermanence of relationships and the ravages of burnout. SUMMARY:Thay Thông Pháp: The Five Remembrances: my conclusions concerning their meaning for our lives.
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nFrom Thay: \n\n\n\n“The Five Remembrances point to our daily experience of the relative world. They are presented as a means by which we might deal with those aspects of life that present pain and suffering. How might I get ready to face the worst?  \n\n\n\n“This reflection of mine has\, surprisingly to me\, shown me that the realities of life are just that\, realities of life which\, in fact\, bring benefit\, meaning and understanding. SUMMARY:Contemplation as Meditation - Easter Long Weekend Retreat with Bhante Akaliko
DESCRIPTION:Registration via Eventbrite \n\n\n\nAbout the Retreat\n\n\n\nContemplation as Meditation: A Four Day Sutta Retreat on the Annusatis. \n\n\n\nThe Buddha taught that reflection\, recollection and contemplation have an important role to play in the development of our meditation practice. Skillful use of particular subjects help us incline the mind towards wholesome states so that we can make progress on the spiritual path and develop peace and wisdom. The six main annusatis are: recollecting the Buddha\, Dhamma\, Sangha\, Ethical Conduct\, Generosity\, and Heavenly Beings. Further contemplations include the body\, death\, and peace. \n\n\n\nIn this 4-day sutta retreat\, we explore the Buddha’s themes for contemplation\, inspiring and uplifting the mind in ways that naturally lead to joyful states and deepen into stillness. \n\n\n\nABOUT AKĀLIKO BHIKKHU \n\n\n\nAkāliko Bhikkhu (he him) is an Australian monk in the Theravada forest tradition. Bhante Akāliko first encountered Buddhism as a teenager and spent over twenty years practising in different traditions before taking full ordination with Ajahn Brahm as his preceptor at Bodhinyana monastery in 2016. He currently resides with his long-term teacher\, Bhante Sujato\, at Lokanta Vihara (the Monastery at the End of the World) in Sydney\, Australia. \n\n\n\nBhante Akāliko is the founder of Rainbodhi LGBTQIA+ Buddhist Community and a Buddhist chaplain at Western Sydney University. He is also on the board of directors of the Buddhist Council of NSW. \n\n\n\nGENERAL \n\n\n\nVejjasala\, located just outside the village of Wingello in the Southern Highlands of NSW\, is the retreat centre of the Association of Engaged Buddhists (AEB). Obviously if you are experiencing any symptoms\, please do not attend the retreat and notify the organisers at office@engagedbuddhists.org.au. \n\n\n\nSCHEDULE AND EXPECTATIONS \n\n\n\nAfter the first evening of the retreat\, the rest of the retreat will be held in noble silence. Retreatants generally do not speak to each other unless absolutely necessary. In noble silence\, retreatants can better stay with their own experience\, moment by moment. In this way\, awareness increases\, the body relaxes and the mind clears and space opens for understanding and insight to develop. \n\n\n\nAttendees will be asked to contribute to the ongoing maintenance of Vejjasala by spending some time on one or more of the various maintenance tasks that are necessary at the time. A list of current/ongoing jobs will be distributed with registration and participants are welcome to contribute to these activities either during the retreat or upon its completion (i.e. after lunch on Sunday). The Retreat Coordinator will be able to provide guidance on these tasks at the retreat. \n\n\n\nVejjasala is a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ people. \n\n\n\nENQUIRIES \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions regarding the retreat\, please email the Retreat Coordinator at office@engagedbuddhists.org.au.

SUMMARY:Chand Sirimanne - The wings of the bird: combining concentration and awareness
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThe wings of the bird: Combining concentration (samādhi) and awareness (sati) – using different types of meditative practices. \n\n\n\n In Buddhism sati (mindfulness) is part and parcel of every type of meditative practice\, conduct and world view rather than a specific\, disengaged technique. It is also a positive mindset that we seek to cultivate rather than ordinary awareness that we use in every type of mental\, verbal and physical action including negative ones. After all\, one needs to be very mindful in carrying out criminal activities so as not to get caught! \n\n\n\nThe suttas describe this positive mindfulness and focused attention as the wings of a bird. The bird cannot fly with only one wing\, and it is well developed concentration that sharpens and strengthens mindfulness helping to cut through delusion. There is also nothing secular about a high level of concentration – we need it for doing any activity well. From driving\, cooking to learning a language. While focusing on the breath is excellent\, not everyone finds it easy to sustain their attention for any length of time especially at the start. Buddha himself is said to have stated that it is not for everyone\, and he recommended specific meditation types to suit different personalities. \n\n\n\nBuddhism has a range of meditative objects and subjects designed to improve levels of samādhi suitable for those who struggle with keeping their attention on the breath. \n\n\n\nWe welcome you to join us in this meditation & discussion series guided by Chand Sirimanne\, where we can learn some different techniques to improve our practice. We will have an opportunity to discuss & share our practice in a safe and supportive environment. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nChand R. Sirimanne was born in Sri Lanka and migrated to Australia in 1990. She has worked as a freelance writer and an ESL instructor for over three decades mainly in Australia but also in Canada and Sri Lanka. Chand currently works as a writer/researcher\, and she has written and translated several articles and works on Buddhism. She has a MA in Applied Linguistics from Macquarie University and a PhD from the Department of Studies in Religion\, University of Sydney. Chand’s doctoral thesis was on The evolving relevance and therapeutic value of the ethico-psychological perspective of the mind-body complex and meditation in Theravāda Buddhism. She has been practising meditation since 2001. \n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. SUMMARY:Bhante Pandit - Agency: how action shapes perception in the arising of experience
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThis topic is a continuation of the exploration of Dependent Origination. Previously we looked at how the mind picks up one thing at a time and reacts to it. But we Sapiens are not just reaction machines – we initiate and perpetuate actions deliberately. This too has a cascade effect in consciousness.Do not miss this opportunity to join us for this powerful and insightful teaching of Venerable Pandit Bhikkhu on Thursday 7 April\, 2022 -7.30pm. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nPandit Bhikkhu: While searching aimlessly for something to read in a quiet library in rural New Zealand Pandit came across a book on Buddhism. Inspired to investigate further he devoured what few books on the topic he could find\, and then took off to start some monastery stays and short retreats. Before leaving NZ and heading back to his native England he took some longer retreats\, including 10 days at Te Moata retreat centre in the Coromandel Peninsula of NZ with Steven Smith teaching Mahasi style meditation. Following the Forest temples in the lineage of Luang Phor Chah for a few years\, Pandit entered Ratanagiri Monastery in Newcastle\, Northern UK in 1994 as an Anagarika (novice). Six months there\, and then six months further in Amaravati while Ajahn Sumedho was abbot\, convinced him to ordain as a monk. He headed off to Thailand in late 1996 and ordained as a Buddhist monk at Wat Luang Phor Sodh in Rajaburi Province. Four years later he moved to Wat Paknam\, Bhasicharoen in order to attend the monastic university\, gaining a degree in psychology. \n\n\n\nHaving had experience in meditation styles of  Mahasi Sayadaw\, Ajahn Chah\, Dhammakaya\, and some Tibetan\, Pandit Bhikkhu claims no lineage other than Buddhism. His own approach uses reflection on the six senses to hold the mind in empty alert awareness. But there are various techniques that are useful for people at different times in their practise. Just so long as you keep making an effort\, with the right goal in mind\, progress will be made. \n\n\n\nHis interests\, besides nuclear power\, vertical axis wind turbines and the Electric Universe theory\, include psychology\, faerie tales\, and other mystic religious traditions. \n\n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. SUMMARY:March Informal Retreat for AEB Members
DESCRIPTION:Informal meditation retreat for AEB members at Vejjasala \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nGENERAL \n\n\n\nVejjasala\, located just outside the village of Wingello in the Southern Highlands of NSW\, is the retreat centre of the Association of Engaged Buddhists (AEB). The name\, Vejjasala\, means a place for healing. \n\n\n\nAEB informal retreats are held at Vejjasala for Association Members/Friends only. Only those who have held membership for at least three months are eligible for these retreats. For more information on joining AEB\, please check our website. \n\n\n\nInformal retreats are held from Friday afternoon/evenings through to Sunday lunchtime. Tickets are assigned strictly on a first-come\, first-served basis via Eventrbite. \n\n\n\nCOVID \n\n\n\nWe are requiring that all attendees conduct a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) within 24 hours of attending the retreat. Take a photo of your result and email to office@engagedbuddhists.org.au in order to be able to attend the retreat. All attendees must be fully vaccinated and send a screenshot of vaccination status along with RAT test results per the above. This is to ensure the safety of all members attending the retreat.\n\n\n\nAdequate social distancing\, hand-washing and other sensible measure should be followed by all attendees. \n\n\n\nIt should be noted that participants attend these informal retreats entirely at their own discretion and should consider their own risks and responsibilities in regard to COVID. While reasonable efforts will be taken in regard to providing a safe environment\, the Association takes no responsibility for individuals’ behaviour or health consequences arising from attending a retreat. Obviously if you are experiencing any symptoms\, please do not attend the retreat and notify the organisers at office@engagedbuddhists.org.au. \n\n\n\nSCHEDULE AND EXPECTATIONS \n\n\n\nAs these retreats will not be formally catered or coordinated beyond a few basics\, a set charge will not be required\, with participants encouraged to donate to the Association according to their means. Details for how to donate will be provided upon registration. A suggested minimum of $30/night in order to cover running expenses would be appreciated. \n\n\n\nAttendees will be asked to choose a group meal to contribute to\, either by bringing ingredients and cooking on-site or pre-prepared meals. Meals will be coordinated in cooperation with attendees by the Retreat Coordinator. \n\n\n\nOther than shared meals\, these retreats are designed for self-reflection and meditation\, with no formal timings for practice or other activities. As such they are not really designed for those seeking instruction on beginning meditation. \n\n\n\nWhile we won’t be conducting these retreats strictly in noble silence\, we’d encourage a sense of mindfulness in speech and\, outside of shared meals and not to disturb/speak to other participants or hold conversations unless necessary. In this way retreatants can better stay with their own experience\, moment by moment.

SUMMARY:Meditation & Discussion Session guided by Chand Sirimanne - How to Strengthen Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nWhat can we do to strengthen mindfulness\, to improve its quality and broaden its scope? \n\n\n\nToday mindfulness\, or rather secular mindfulness\, is seen as a one size fits all technique that can help anyone with a range of issues. While even a very basic mindfulness practice can have positive outcomes. \n\n\n\nBuddhism offers numerous ways to strengthen and improve its quality and power. It offers a proactive way to improve the mind – slowly diminishing the Three Toxins – greed\, hatred and delusion\, and replacing them with generosity\, kindness and understanding of reality. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nChand R. Sirimanne was born in Sri Lanka and migrated to Australia in 1990.
