SUMMARY:Venerable Pandit Bhikkhu: Saving Snow Whites
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\n“Saving Snow White” is not about rescuing the princess from a poisoned apple or an evil queen. Instead\, it’s about saving the wisdom embedded within the story. Venerable Pandit will enlighten us with the dharma of the snow white story\, and lessons for the unconscious mind \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nPandit Bhikkhu: While searching aimlessly for something to read in a quiet library in rural New Zealand Pandit came across a book on Buddhism. Inspired to investigate further he devoured what few books on the topic he could find\, and then took off to start some monastery stays and short retreats. Before leaving NZ and heading back to his native England he took some longer retreats\, including 10 days at Te Moata retreat centre in the Coromandel Peninsula of NZ with Steven Smith teaching Mahasi style meditation. Following the Forest temples in the lineage of Luang Phor Chah for a few years\, Pandit entered Ratanagiri Monastery in Newcastle\, Northern UK in 1994 as an Anagarika (novice). Six months there\, and then six months further in Amaravati while Ajahn Sumedho was abbot\, convinced him to ordain as a monk. He headed off to Thailand in late 1996 and ordained as a Buddhist monk at Wat Luang Phor Sodh in Rajaburi Province. Four years later he moved to Wat Paknam\, Bhasicharoen in order to attend the monastic university\, gaining a degree in psychology. \n\n\n\nHaving had experience in meditation styles of  Mahasi Sayadaw\, Ajahn Chah\, Dhammakaya\, and some Tibetan\, Pandit Bhikkhu claims no lineage other than Buddhism. His own approach uses reflection on the six senses to hold the mind in empty alert awareness. But there are various techniques that are useful for people at different times in their practise. Just so long as you keep making an effort\, with the right goal in mind\, progress will be made. \n\n\n\nHis interests\, besides nuclear power\, vertical axis wind turbines and the Electric Universe theory\, include psychology\, faerie tales\, and other mystic religious traditions. \n\n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. Download iCal calendar for the Zoom event. \n\n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 985 1050 0274\n\n\n\nPasscode: 645945

SUMMARY:Kynan Tan: The Practice of Mettā (Cultivating Loving-Kindness)
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nCultivating intentions of friendliness and goodwill is a foundational practice in many contemplative traditions. Yet when left to guide ourselves\, it can be unclear how to cultivate these intentions and what to do when something quite different from our intentions arises. In this session we will discuss why these practices are important\, how we can allow the practice to flourish through creative use of visualization\, phrases\, and body awareness\, and we will do guided and self-guided practice. We will also look at how various Buddhist traditions describe the practice of mettā and how this has been adapted and extended over time. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nKynan Tan is a meditation teacher who takes a collaborative approach to helping students achieve their meditation goals. He came to meditation after struggles with stress\, anxiety\, and depression and found the practice to be transformative. He believes that meditation has enormous potential for creating positive change and opening up new ways of relating to our experience. \n\n\n\nKynan draws upon a number of different modern and traditional techniques of contemplative and introspective practice. He is a longtime practitioner of the stages of śamatha-vipassanā (as presented in the book The Mind Illuminated)\, Rob Burbea’s insight meditation techniques\, nondual awareness\, and brahmavihārā practices (mettā\, compassion\, empathetic joy\, and equanimity). \n\n\n\nKynan studies meditation with Dr. Tucker Peck. He teaches the Pragmatic Dharma Club at the San Francisco Dharma Collective\, leads retreats\, and teaches one-on-one instruction and online meditation courses. Kynan has sat a number of retreats\, including a month-long solo retreat in 2021. \n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. Download iCal calendar for the Zoom event. \n\n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 985 1050 0274\n\n\n\nPasscode: 645945

SUMMARY:Jonathan Page: Health (Wholeness) and Buddhist Practice
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nHealth is a state of complete physical\, mental\, social and spiritual well-being\, a deep sense of “wholeness”\, interconnection and belonging. \n\n\n\nHealth is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. \n\n\n\nThrough considering this proposition we may gain a new perspective on the “world out there”\, with its living inhabitants (many are self-declared Homo sapiens)\, and multifarious other extant creatures and infinite other phenomena\, and may gain a deep insight into the “world in here”. \n\n\n\nWe may gain a greater felt sense of our mutual interdependence with all of life. \n\n\n\nAs Thich Nhat Hahn says: “We actually experience inter-being with each other and the world”. \n\n\n\nPlease join Dr. Jonathan Page for an insightful talk & Dharma discussion on 10th August\, 2023\, 7.30pm. Looking forward to seeing you. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nJonathan Page has been a medical oncologist for 40 years and whose meditation practice goes back to 1984\, but to his chagrin was largely an erratic practitioner until 2004\, generally employing meditation as a last resort to manage innumerable life crises (with variable impact). \n\n\n\nOver time he has found meditation to be of great personal benefit\, particularly in navigating the major challenges of life\, notably aging and mortality\, the impermanence of relationships and the ravages of burnout. \n\n\n\nIn understanding and largely overcoming burnout it has been possible to treat cancer patients with greater compassion\, attending to the vital psycho-spiritual domain\, whilst retaining some degree of resilience. Meditation can open the door to clear understanding and vast possibility. \n\n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nVenerable Pandit Bhikku will continue to explore the Buddha’s teaching about our Mind. DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nDr. Jonathan Page\, the renowned Dhamma teacher and Medical Oncologist will be back to deliver another important topic: “Premature Transcendence”. \n\n\n\nDr. Page explained\, Premature Transcendence\, in summary\, means “trying to rise above the raw and messy side of our humanness before we have fully faced it and made peace with it”. \n\n\n\nPlease join Dr. Jonathan Page for an insightful talk & Dharma discussion on 8th June 2023\, 7.30pm. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nJonathan Page has been a medical oncologist for 40 years and whose meditation practice goes back to 1984\, but to his chagrin was largely an erratic practitioner until 2004\, generally employing meditation as a last resort to manage innumerable life crises (with variable impact). Over time he has found meditation to be of great personal benefit\, particularly in navigating the major challenges of life\, notably aging and mortality\, the impermanence of relationships and the ravages of burnout. In understanding and largely overcoming burnout it has been possible to treat cancer patients with greater compassion\, attending to the vital psycho-spiritual domain\, whilst retaining some degree of resilience. SUMMARY:Kynan Tan: Exiting The Matrix
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nKynan had an interesting experience\, when\, at the age of 11\, he was taken to see the blockbuster movie The Matrix and found himself pondering if all the people he knew might very well be computer simulations. While initially troubling\, this experience did eventually open to insight about what we can know through sensory experience and the way that our experience is created by the way we look at the world. \n\n\n\nKynan will recount this story and talk about the insightful ways of looking at practices as described by Rob Burbea. There will be a guided meditation on mindfully observing and discerning the limits of sensory experience. There will also be a discussion of the Buddha’s teaching on emptiness (suññatā) and how this has progressed through the history of Buddhist practice. \n\n\n\nPlease join Kynan & the community\, on Thursday 18 May 2023 7.30 – 9.00pm (AEST) for a guided meditation & Dhamma discussion. SUMMARY:Bhante Pandit: The Unfettered Mind
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nVenerable Pandit Bhikku will return and lead us to discover “The Unfettered Mind”. What is it like to have a mind free of hindrances? \n\n\n\nPlease join Bhante Pandit on Thursday 11 May 2023\, 7.30 – 9.00pm AEST (Bangkok time 4.30pm)) for another interesting and familiar topic based on the Āvaraṇanīvaraṇa Sutta. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nPandit Bhikkhu: While searching aimlessly for something to read in a quiet library in rural New Zealand Pandit came across a book on Buddhism. SUMMARY:Sue Toohey: The shape-shifting self
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThe shape-shifting self – coming to grips with the idea of no permanent self. \n\n\n\nAnatta is one of the Buddha’s core teachings\, one of the key ideas\, which he said distinguished his teaching from that of all the other teachers of his day. And even today\, more than 2000 years after the time of the Buddha\, I think you will find that of all the major religions Buddhism is the only one that teaches that there is no unique and everlasting self or soul. Even though we may see ourselves as committed Buddhists\, many of us find the idea of anatta deeply unsettling. \n\n\n\nIn this evening’s talk\, Sue will explore with us what it means to accept the idea of no permanent self and how that might lead to our greater freedom and happiness. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nSue Toohey is an experienced Dhamma\, meditation and yoga teacher\, qualified in both Hatha and Dru styles of yoga. She regularly takes meditation drop-in classes at the Buddhist Library. Formerly a university lecturer in the School of Public Health at UNSW\, she has a lifelong interest in using yoga to counteract depression and anxiety and develop mental well-being. She has been a Buddhist practitioner for more than 30 years. \n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. SUMMARY:Day of Practice at the Buddhist Library with Kynan Tan
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\n\nThe Day of Practice will provide an opportunity to take a pause from the busyness and complexities of daily life to focus on meditation\, awareness\, and tranquility. We will minimise interactions with others\, put our phones on aeroplane mode\, and take a break from our usual concerns. This will create a container that allows us to deepen our meditation and awareness in ways that may not always be possible during daily life. \n\n\n\nUposatha days are a common practice in Buddhism where practitioners reaffirm and renew their commitment to dharma practice. By consciously and intentionally dedicating a period of time to the practice of meditation\, keeping precepts\, and studying the dharma with others\, the practice is developed and strengthened. \n\n\n\nThis is an opportunity to receive instruction from a teacher and practice with others in conditions similar to a retreat setting. Throughout the day there will be seated and walking meditation\, guided group practice\, a dharma talk\, and a 1:1 meeting with Kynan. \n\n\n\nArrive from 8:45am. Please come on time as we will close the doors before beginning the first session. All attendees will be expected to stay for the whole day. \n\n\n\nThere are plenty of chairs\, zafus\, cushions\, and benches. There is a dedicated lunch break with time to get food from a local establishment. There are many cafes and restaurants in the area\, including Newtown which is a 10-minute walk. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Kynan on kynantctan@gmail.com \n\n\n\nFrom a past participant:“I attended the one day with Kynan. It was great for inspiring me to meditate more consistently and refreshed my thinking around the Buddhist texts. Kynan is a thoughtful and very grounded teacher. I trust him and would recommend him to anyone thinking of attending one of his meditation day\, whatever level you’re at.” \n\n\n\nYou must register in advance via the Buddhist Library website. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kynan\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKynan Tan is a meditation teacher who takes a collaborative approach to helping students achieve their meditation goals. He is a longtime practitioner of the stages of samatha-vipassana (as presented in the book The Mind Illuminated)\, Rob Burbea’s insight meditation techniques\, nondual awareness\, and brahmavihara practices (metta\, compassion\, empathetic joy\, and equanimity). \n\n\n\nDana\n\n\n\nCost: Attendance is by dana (generosity). This event is possible through past acts of generosity and anything you are able to offer will help to make more teachings possible. When registering you will be invited to make a donation to support the teacher\, the Association of Engaged Buddhists\, and the Buddhist Library. You may also offer dana after the event. \n\n\n\nAll donations to the Buddhist Library of $2 and over are tax deductible. \n\n\n\nDana is the traditional practice of generosity\, the extending of one’s goodwill\, which is fundamental to Buddhism and other spiritual traditions. The dana you give helps to maintain the Library and allows it to offer more teachings on the Dhamma so that others may benefit in the future. It is up to each person to determine the amount of dana they’d like to offer. We understand that this is a difficult time financially for many\, and people will give what they can. An appropriate dana can’t be prescribed but requires sensitivity to its intent and to the individual’s own situation\, as well as awareness of the cost of organising events and supporting teachers who spread the Dhamma.

SUMMARY:Pandit Bhikkhu: The scattered and unscattered mind
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThe talk will be based on the Sutta (AN 6.14) where the Buddha describes how to have a good death.(Venerable Sujato’s translation here) \n\n\n\nPlease join Bhante Pandit\, all the way from Bangkok\, on Thursday 9 March 2023\, 7.30 – 9.00pm (AEST) for another insightful & intriguing talk. Looking forward to seeing you. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nPandit Bhikkhu: While searching aimlessly for something to read in a quiet library in rural New Zealand Pandit came across a book on Buddhism. SUMMARY:Bhante Akāliko: Cultivating the Awakening Factors (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThe bojjhangas\, or awakening factors\, are seven qualities that lead all the way to Enlightenment. These are: mindfulness\, investigation of principles\, energy\, rapture\, tranquility\, samādhi\, and equanimity. Cultivating these factors in meditation is part of the practice of Right Effort of the Noble Eightfold Path. In this talk we explore each of the awakening factors and learn how the Buddha instructed us to practise these to their perfection. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nAkāliko Bhikkhu is an Australian monk in the Theravada forest tradition. He is the spiritual director of Little Dust and founder of Rainbodhi LGBTQIA+ Buddhist Community. Bhante Akāliko is also the spiritual advisor of Central West Buddhists and a chaplain at Western Sydney University. He sits on the boards of the Buddhist Council of NSW and the Federation of Australian Buddhist Councils. \n\n\n\nBhante Akāliko went forth as a monastic in 2016 and received full ordination with Ajahn Brahm at Bodhinyana monastery in 2017. He lived for several years with Bhante Sujato at the Monastery at the End of the World in Sydney and now lives as a wandering monk\, looking for a place to settle and shake off the dust. \n\n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. SUMMARY:Sue Toohey: Letting Go and Not Picking Things Up (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThe Buddha taught 10 Perfections – 10 good qualities that we can develop which lead us on the path to enlightenment – otherwise known as complete freedom of heart and mind. The third of these 10 perfections is ‘nekhamma’ which might be translated as letting go and not picking things up. Nekhamma is the counterforce to all of the ‘wanting’ energy in our everyday lives. Whenever we find ourselves wanting something – whether it’s a new pair of shoes or a more understanding and appreciative partner\, we can apply the energy of nekhamma and see what happens. Let’s talk about the ways in which we can de-clutter our lives\, simplify our interactions with others and clear our minds\, while bringing ourselves a little closer to that great freedom of heart and mind. SUMMARY:Kynan Tan: One Teaching\, Two Arrows\, Three Poisons\, Four Noble Truths (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nIn his first teaching after his awakening\, the Buddha gave a succinct summary of what he had learned under the bodhi tree. This is the discourse on the Four Noble Truths: dukkha (suffering)\, taṇhā (craving)\, releasing of taṇhā and dukkha\, and the Eightfold Path to practise towards this understanding. This teaching could be seen as key to understanding buddhist practice. \n\n\n\nThis talk will explore the Four Noble Truths and how they can be relevant to our lives and practice. We will look at the different ways of understanding dukkha as suffering\, stress\, or mental resistance\, the difference between taṇhā (craving) and wholesome desire\, how we can start to notice clinging and attachment in our experience\, and ways to practise meditation that lead to letting go and the cessation of dukkha. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nKynan Tan is a meditation teacher who is interested in helping students to achieve their meditation goals\, whatever they may be. He takes a collaborative and student-centred approach to explore the depths of what is possible through the many dimensions of practice. Kynan believes that meditation has enormous potential for creating positive change and opening up space for new ways of relating to experience. \n\n\n\nKynan has experience across a range of meditative and introspective traditions and techniques. He brings his experience as an artist\, musician\, and programmer into his understanding and sharing of Dharma teachings in a way that is clear\, practical\, and creative. Kynan is authorized to teach by Dr. Tucker Peck\, a clinical psychologist and meditation teacher. \n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night.
