SUMMARY:Walking the Path: A Weekend Retreat with Grahame White
DESCRIPTION:“The happiness of meditation is the highest happiness” – The Buddha \n\n\n\nJoin meditation teacher Grahame White for a weekend retreat exploring the fundamentals of Insight (Vipassana) Meditation. This weekend retreat will be offered in the green heart of NSW’s Southern Highlands at the Vejjasala Retreat Centre\, Wingello. \n\n\n\nPractising Vipassana meditation is perhaps the greatest gift we can give to ourselves and others. Vipassana is concerned primarily with the cultivation of awareness and understanding. Awareness so that we can see our minds more clearly and understanding so that we can know what is useful and what is not useful for experiencing a deep harmonious relationship with ourselves and the world. \n\n\n\nThis retreat is suitable for beginners and practitioners of all levels. \n\n\n\nAbout the Teacher\n\n\n\nGrahame White has been involved in Buddhist meditation practice for over 40 years. He took a primary role in the establishment of Vipassana (insight) meditation in the tradition of Mahasi Sayadaw in Australia and co-founded the Blue Mountains Insight Meditation Centre. He currently leads introductory and day-long courses in Australia and also regularly teaches retreats in the United States and various countries in Asia. Grahame has also helped pioneer the workshop format of teaching meditation that enhances the transfer of mindfulness from the formal sitting practice into daily life. \n\n\n\nVenue and Cost\n\n\n\nVejjasala\, located just outside the village of Wingello in the Southern Highlands of NSW\, is the retreat centre of the Association of Engaged Buddhists (AEB). The name\, Vejjasala\, means a place for healing. \n\n\n\nTickets are assigned on a first-come\, first-served basis via Eventrbite. \n\n\n\nThis retreat is catered with three vegetarian meals per day. Please indicate if you have any allergies or dietary requirements. Please note: we may not be able to accommodate all dietary requests. \n\n\n\nThe cost for the retreat is $250. Members and Friends of the Association of Engaged Buddhists should use the Promo code AEBMEM to receive the member price of $200 (a discount of $50). This cost covers food and accommodation.  \n\n\n\nThe annual membership fee for AEB is $60.00. To join AEB\, visit our membership page.

SUMMARY:The journey of losing Lucy - by Thay Thong Phap
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nLucy\, Thay’s beloved dog\, his companion & loyal friend\, passed away peacefully in his arm on September 21. The bond between a human and a canine companion is a unique and profound connection. It transcends words\, built on shared experiences\, silent understanding\, and the purest form of love. Lucy was not just a pet for Thay; she was family — a source of joy\, comfort\, and solace. As Thay cradled Lucy in his arms during her final moments\, he found refuge in the teachings that guide us through the inevitable pain of losing our loved ones. Buddhism teaches us about the nature of suffering and the impermanence of life. Lucy’s departure has become a profound lesson\, a reminder that life is a fleeting\, fragile gift that we must cherish and appreciate. In this talk\, Thay will share with you the experience of losing Lucy and all that he has learned from the whole of our lives together. There will be lots of discussion and reflection. \n\n\n\nPlease join Thay & the community for this insightful talk and meditation on Thursday 26 October\, 2023 ~ 7.30pm – 9.00pm. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nThích Trúc Thông Pháp is a bhikkhu (fully ordained monk) in a Vietnamese meditation tradition. His teacher is the Most Venerable Thầy Thích Thanh Từ\, a meditation master in the Truc Lam (Bamboo Forest) school. Originating from Port Adelaide in South Australia and then Tasmania from 2010- 2017\, he now lives in the Southern Flinders Ranges with a small community of Anglican religious brothers and sisters. He has a Master’s Degree in Social Sciences (Counselling) and a Diploma in Psychosynthesis and was the Buddhist representative chaplain at the University of Tasmania for four years prior to working for four years as the Buddhist chaplain at Oasis\, the multifaith chaplaincy centre at Flinders University\, SA. \n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. SUMMARY:Those Pesky Thoughts – how to control thinking and when to just observe it
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nAfter Venerable Pandit Bhikkhu‘s enlightening talk “What Do You Think” in July\, where Bhante delved deep into the intricacies of our thought processes\, many requested further teachings on how to control our minds. We’re thrilled to announce that Bhante is returning to speak on this topic! \n\n\n\nJoin us on Thursday 19 October 7.30–9.00pm AEST (5.30pm Bangkok time) when Venerable Pandit Bhikkhu will guide us on the journey to understanding and managing our thoughts. Learn when to take control and when to simply observe those pesky thoughts that can tangle our mind.  \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nVenerable Pandit Bhikkhu was ordained in the Thai Theravada Buddhist tradition in 1997 in a parkland monastery\, Rajaburi Province. SUMMARY:Health (Wholeness) and Buddhist Practice\, Part II
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nHealth is a state of complete physical\, mental\, social and spiritual well-being\, a deep sense of “wholeness”\, interconnection and belonging. Health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. \n\n\n\nThrough considering this proposition we may gain a new perspective on the “world out there”\, with its living inhabitants (many are self-declared Homo sapiens)\, and multifarious other extant creatures and infinite other phenomena\, and may gain a deep insight into the “world in here”. \n\n\n\nWe may gain a greater felt sense of our mutual interdependence with all of life. As Thich Nhat Han says: “We actually experience inter-being with each other and the world.” \n\n\n\nPlease join Dr Jonathan Page on 12th October 2023\, 7.30pm for the second part of the talk on Health (Wholeness) and Buddhist Practice. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n Dr Jonathan Page has been a medical oncologist for 40 years and whose meditation practice goes back to 1984\, but to his chagrin was largely an erratic practitioner until 2004\, generally employing meditation as a last resort to manage innumerable life crises (with variable impact). \n\n\n\nOver time he has found meditation to be of great personal benefit\, particularly in navigating the major challenges of life\, notably aging and mortality\, the impermanence of relationships and the ravages of burnout. In understanding and largely overcoming burnout it has been possible to treat cancer patients with greater compassion\, attending to the vital psycho-spiritual domain\, whilst retaining some degree of resilience. Meditation can open the door to clear understanding and vast possibility. \n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. SUMMARY:Sue Toohey: Enlightened people or enlightened actions
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nMany of us find the idea of enlightenment almost too big to comprehend. The idea that we might become fully enlightened beings seems unlikely – at least in this life. Tonight with Sue Toohey we discuss a saying from the Zen teacher\, Shunryu Suzuki\, which may help us explore our understanding of what enlightenment is and at the same time help us develop greater compassion for ourselves and for our teachers. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nSue Toohey is an experienced Dhamma\, meditation and yoga teacher\, qualified in both Hatha and Dru styles of yoga. She regularly takes meditation drop-in classes at the Buddhist Library. Formerly a university lecturer in the School of Public Health at UNSW\, she has a lifelong interest in using yoga to counteract depression and anxiety and develop mental well-being. She has been a Buddhist practitioner for more than 30 years. \n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. SUMMARY:Venerable Pandit Bhikkhu: Saving Snow Whites
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\n“Saving Snow White” is not about rescuing the princess from a poisoned apple or an evil queen. Instead\, it’s about saving the wisdom embedded within the story. Venerable Pandit will enlighten us with the dharma of the snow white story\, and lessons for the unconscious mind \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nPandit Bhikkhu: While searching aimlessly for something to read in a quiet library in rural New Zealand Pandit came across a book on Buddhism. Inspired to investigate further he devoured what few books on the topic he could find\, and then took off to start some monastery stays and short retreats. Before leaving NZ and heading back to his native England he took some longer retreats\, including 10 days at Te Moata retreat centre in the Coromandel Peninsula of NZ with Steven Smith teaching Mahasi style meditation. Following the Forest temples in the lineage of Luang Phor Chah for a few years\, Pandit entered Ratanagiri Monastery in Newcastle\, Northern UK in 1994 as an Anagarika (novice). Six months there\, and then six months further in Amaravati while Ajahn Sumedho was abbot\, convinced him to ordain as a monk. He headed off to Thailand in late 1996 and ordained as a Buddhist monk at Wat Luang Phor Sodh in Rajaburi Province. Four years later he moved to Wat Paknam\, Bhasicharoen in order to attend the monastic university\, gaining a degree in psychology. \n\n\n\nHaving had experience in meditation styles of  Mahasi Sayadaw\, Ajahn Chah\, Dhammakaya\, and some Tibetan\, Pandit Bhikkhu claims no lineage other than Buddhism. His own approach uses reflection on the six senses to hold the mind in empty alert awareness. But there are various techniques that are useful for people at different times in their practise. Just so long as you keep making an effort\, with the right goal in mind\, progress will be made. \n\n\n\nHis interests\, besides nuclear power\, vertical axis wind turbines and the Electric Universe theory\, include psychology\, faerie tales\, and other mystic religious traditions. \n\n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. SUMMARY:Kynan Tan: The Practice of Mettā (Cultivating Loving-Kindness)
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nCultivating intentions of friendliness and goodwill is a foundational practice in many contemplative traditions. Yet when left to guide ourselves\, it can be unclear how to cultivate these intentions and what to do when something quite different from our intentions arises. In this session we will discuss why these practices are important\, how we can allow the practice to flourish through creative use of visualization\, phrases\, and body awareness\, and we will do guided and self-guided practice. We will also look at how various Buddhist traditions describe the practice of mettā and how this has been adapted and extended over time. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nKynan Tan is a meditation teacher who takes a collaborative approach to helping students achieve their meditation goals. He came to meditation after struggles with stress\, anxiety\, and depression and found the practice to be transformative. He believes that meditation has enormous potential for creating positive change and opening up new ways of relating to our experience. \n\n\n\nKynan draws upon a number of different modern and traditional techniques of contemplative and introspective practice. He is a longtime practitioner of the stages of śamatha-vipassanā (as presented in the book The Mind Illuminated)\, Rob Burbea’s insight meditation techniques\, nondual awareness\, and brahmavihārā practices (mettā\, compassion\, empathetic joy\, and equanimity). \n\n\n\nKynan studies meditation with Dr. Tucker Peck. He teaches the Pragmatic Dharma Club at the San Francisco Dharma Collective\, leads retreats\, and teaches one-on-one instruction and online meditation courses. Kynan has sat a number of retreats\, including a month-long solo retreat in 2021. \n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. SUMMARY:Jonathan Page: Health (Wholeness) and Buddhist Practice
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nHealth is a state of complete physical\, mental\, social and spiritual well-being\, a deep sense of “wholeness”\, interconnection and belonging. \n\n\n\nHealth is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. \n\n\n\nAs Thich Nhat Hahn says: “We actually experience inter-being with each other and the world”. \n\n\n\nPlease join Dr. Jonathan Page for an insightful talk & Dharma discussion on 10th August\, 2023\, 7.30pm. Looking forward to seeing you. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nJonathan Page has been a medical oncologist for 40 years and whose meditation practice goes back to 1984\, but to his chagrin was largely an erratic practitioner until 2004\, generally employing meditation as a last resort to manage innumerable life crises (with variable impact). \n\n\n\nOver time he has found meditation to be of great personal benefit\, particularly in navigating the major challenges of life\, notably aging and mortality\, the impermanence of relationships and the ravages of burnout. \n\n\n\nIn understanding and largely overcoming burnout it has been possible to treat cancer patients with greater compassion\, attending to the vital psycho-spiritual domain\, whilst retaining some degree of resilience. Meditation can open the door to clear understanding and vast possibility. \n\n\n\n\nInfo\n\n\n\nView live on Zoom from 7.25pm on the night. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. SUMMARY:Bhante Pandit: When the Mind Leans Into Perceiving
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nVenerable Pandit Bhikku will continue to explore the Buddha’s teaching about our Mind. In this talk\, Bhante will show us what happens “When the Mind Leans into Perceiving”. This is the original Buddhist teaching on the fuels of consciousness. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nPandit Bhikkhu: While searching aimlessly for something to read in a quiet library in rural New Zealand Pandit came across a book on Buddhism. Talks include meditation and generally conclude at 9pm. Download iCal calendar for the Zoom event. \n\n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 985 1050 0274\n\n\n\nPasscode: 645945

SUMMARY:Kynan Tan: Exiting The Matrix
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nKynan had an interesting experience\, when\, at the age of 11\, he was taken to see the blockbuster movie The Matrix and found himself pondering if all the people he knew might very well be computer simulations. While initially troubling\, this experience did eventually open to insight about what we can know through sensory experience and the way that our experience is created by the way we look at the world. \n\n\n\nKynan will recount this story and talk about the insightful ways of looking at practices as described by Rob Burbea. There will be a guided meditation on mindfully observing and discerning the limits of sensory experience. There will also be a discussion of the Buddha’s teaching on emptiness (suññatā) and how this has progressed through the history of Buddhist practice. \n\n\n\nPlease join Kynan & the community\, on Thursday 18 May 2023 7.30 – 9.00pm (AEST) for a guided meditation & Dhamma discussion. SUMMARY:Sue Toohey: The shape-shifting self
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\nThe shape-shifting self – coming to grips with the idea of no permanent self. \n\n\n\nAnatta is one of the Buddha’s core teachings\, one of the key ideas\, which he said distinguished his teaching from that of all the other teachers of his day. And even today\, more than 2000 years after the time of the Buddha\, I think you will find that of all the major religions Buddhism is the only one that teaches that there is no unique and everlasting self or soul. Even though we may see ourselves as committed Buddhists\, many of us find the idea of anatta deeply unsettling. \n\n\n\nIn this evening’s talk\, Sue will explore with us what it means to accept the idea of no permanent self and how that might lead to our greater freedom and happiness.
