Sue Toohey: The shape-shifting self
20 April 2023 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Description
The shape-shifting self – coming to grips with the idea of no permanent self.
Anatta is one of the Buddha’s core teachings, one of the key ideas, which he said distinguished his teaching from that of all the other teachers of his day. And even today, more than 2000 years after the time of the Buddha, I think you will find that of all the major religions Buddhism is the only one that teaches that there is no unique and everlasting self or soul. Even though we may see ourselves as committed Buddhists, many of us find the idea of anatta deeply unsettling.
In this evening’s talk, Sue will explore with us what it means to accept the idea of no permanent self and how that might lead to our greater freedom and happiness.
