Dr Jonathan Page: The Four Pillars of Well-Being
19 May 2022 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Description
In modern parlance “well-being” has lost much of its meaning, as have love, kindness and happiness, with the true profound meaning, behind the spoken word, often lost, never fully encountered, and thus having no spiritual impact and degrading communication with others.
Nonetheless we can focus our awareness and felt sense on the fundamental phenomenon of Being, as opposed to Not Being, and as opposed to doing or going, and explore, understand and strengthen our sense of Being and therefore the true notion of Well-Being.
We may reacquaint ourselves with the deep wonder of well-being, and receive some stimulus to linger in the experience. In one useful recent analysis of well-being the following four components were reported:
1. Awareness
2. Connection (Inter-connection; Inter-being)
3. Insight
4. Purpose in life
Each pillar can be deeply understood and developed further.
The four are mutually enhancing
Speaker
Jonathan Page has been a medical oncologist for 38 years and whose meditation practice goes back to 1984, but to his chagrin was largely an erratic practitioner until 2004, generally employing meditation as a last resort to manage innumerable life crises (with variable impact).
Over time he has found meditation to be of great personal benefit, particularly in navigating the major challenges of life, notably aging and mortality, the impermanence of relationships and the ravages of burnout. In understanding and largely overcoming burnout it has been possible to treat cancer patients with greater compassion, attending to the vital psycho-spiritual domain, whilst retaining some degree of resilience. Meditation can open the door to clear understanding and vast possibility.
